Isabelle Delage's debut solo album, The Inundation, is a
collection of songs written over the span of her career and recorded between
2004 and 2006. Earning rave early reviews, the album features songs inspired
from daily life and historic events, whose strength stems from strong
melodic lines and a mellow acoustic sound, in a vibrant, soothing voice
that has Isabelle's fans exclaiming "I could listen to you all night!"
From
the wistful title track The Inundation,
a collection of musical images from life before the great St. Lawrence
Seaway and Power Project of 1959, and Kilellan,
about a grand old house that has fallen victim to the modern bulldozer,
to the life-affirming, upbeat Small Things,
the album offers a wonderful mix of strong, insightful writing. It includes
a new recording of the early hit Montreal,
which has been an audience favourite since it was written in 1979. While
Mary's Rainbow and Cordelia
are rooted in the imaginary, others such as I
Never Knew, Little Sister and
A Life as Dark as her Eyes were inspired
from real-life experiences of loss. Other titles such as When
I Wasn't Looking, Because you Love Me
and The Birthday Song are about the universal
life themes of love, children and the wisdom that comes with the passing
of time. The album features one number in French, Mets
ton manteau Jean-Philippe a song based on a real-life story written
in 1999 when Isabelle was doing work with Canada's Missing Children's
Network.
